Oracle - Chapters 16, 17, 18

Chapters 16 and 17 react to post 9/11 China. One of the most shocking details was the description of bootleg 9/11 videos Hessler found on the street. Intercut with popular US war movie footage, the tapes of 9/11 broadcasts were described as crass and boorish. This reaction of borderline glorification of the attacks (or at least the dramatizing of them for entertainment) produces unintentional comedy. Not surprisingly, most Chinese approach the attacks as some the US had coming because they were so arrogant.

In chapter 18, Hessler interviews Jiang Wen, a famous Chinese actor who was currently filming a Chinese western. Jiang Wen was most recently known for filming "Devils on the Doorstep", a movie about a remote Chinese village during the 1945, the last year of Japanese occupation. The chapter provides more insight into Chinese censorship, as the movie was banned from China because it depicted the Chinese villagers of being too passive with a Japanese prisoner and not defending themselves when the Japan slaughtered them.
