Chapter 14 is a brief account of Hessler being detained by Chinese police after camping near a section of the Great Wall as a journalist without a passport. Nothing remarkable about this chapter, except for some comedic interactions with government officials. China's political system is explored in this chapter, however briefly. The bottom three levels of local government can largely democratic and open to nine existing political parties. The top two are also "open", but only to candidates that the Communist Party approves.
Hessler's role as a journalist during the 2001 collision between a Chinese military plane and an American surveillance plane is the topic of Chapter 15. The immediate reaction by Chinese depicts Americans as imperial aggressors once again. The back and forth editing in determining a final draft "letter of regret" and the associated subtleties of translation was pretty funny.
